What is urgent health care abroad?

Urgent health care abroad is defined as care abroad you need urgently, for instance after an accident or due to sudden illness that occurs on a trip. This is health care that you must receive immediately, which could not have been foreseen when you departed on your trip and which cannot wait until you are back in your own country.

Good to know

  • The basic health-care plan covers up to a maximum of what the same health care would have cost in the Netherlands

Medical costs abroad may turn out higher than what the same care would have cost in the Netherlands. It is therefore important to know that the basic health-care plan covers expenses up to a maximum of the Dutch rate. If the health care provided abroad is more expensive than the amount that would in the Netherlands, you will have to pay the difference yourself.

With our Wereldfit and Superfit supplementary health-care plans you are covered for the costs that exceed the Dutch rate for up to 180 days, as long as these costs are not excessively high. You can find all conditions for reimbursement here.

  • Health Basic and Health Premium reimburse the prevailing market rate

Health Basic and Health Premium reimburse emergency care abroad (outside the Netherlands) if you are there short term. We define short term as a maximum of 180 consecutive days. We reimburse up to a maximum of the prevailing market rate in the country of treatment. This means that the rate charged by the health-care provider may not be unreasonably high when compared to the amount charged by other health-care providers in the country of treatment.

  • Reimbursement in accordance with local regulations with the EHIC

If you have a basic health-care plan, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles you to emergency medical care in certain countries. In that case, the regulations of the country in which you are located determine the amount reimbursed. The advantage of this arrangement is that you do not have to advance the costs yourself.

  • With a medical certificate you can safely take your medication with you on your trip

If you use medication, you sometimes need a medical certificate to be able to take that medication abroad. It is therefore sensible to request a medical certificate from your doctor before you travel. With a medical certificate you can take your medication abroad without problems.

  • Save original invoices and referrals

Ensure that the correct information is on the invoice. Save the original invoices and referrals. You will need them to submit your claim.

Suitably insured on your travels

Our supplementary insurance plans Wereldfit and Superfit include extensive cover for emergency care abroad, repatriation and situations in which you have to return earlier because of family circumstances, for example.
