You are a highly skilled migrant

A highly skilled migrant is allowed to work in a country because they have specific scientific knowledge. As a highly skilled migrant, you are entitled to health insurance in the Netherlands.

How do you apply for a basic health-care plan with ONVZ?

If you are coming to the Netherlands to work as a highly skilled migrant, you are entitled to Dutch health insurance.

If you would like to apply for the ONVZ basic health-care plan, we need the following information:

Once we have received all required documents, we will determine the commencement date of your basic health-care plan. We may contact you to request additional documents. 

Send in documents in time

Please send in all documents mentioned above in time.

  • if we receive all required documents within 4 months of the date you are eligible for a basic health-care plan, your basic health-care plan will start retroactively
  • if we receive all required documents after the 4 months has passed, your basic health-care plan will take effect once ONVZ has received all of the necessary documents

Family members

  • Your family members have a residence permit

    If your family members come with you to the Netherlands and they have been issued a residence permit, they may be entitled to health insurance in the Netherlands. Read more.

    Wether your family members are - or are not -  entitled to health insurance in the Netherlands depends on the reason their permit was issued.

    If your family members would like to apply for the ONVZ basic health-care plan as well, please send us the following information.

    • application for the basic health-care plan

    In addition, we will check whether your family members are registered with a Dutch local council and why they were issued a residence permit. Once we have received the application for the basic health-care plan and all the required documents we will determine the commencement date of their basic health-care plan. We may contact you to request additional documents.

  • Your family members do not have a residence permit

    If your family members do not have a residence permit, they cannot take out Dutch health insurance. However, they can apply for the ONVZ Health Basic or Health Premium. Read more.

    If your family members are waiting for a permanent residence permit and are registered with a Dutch local council, they can apply for Health Basic or Health Premium. Health Basic is a health-care plan that covers most of the necessary medical costs. Health Premium offers more extensive coverage for things like physical therapy (e.g. physiotherapy), dental care and general basic mental health care (GGZ).

    Please note: Health Basic and Health Premium are subject to a screening procedure to determine whether you are eligible. This means that you will be asked to answer some questions about your family members' medical history when applying for Health Basic or Health Premium.
